elk walk (June 2016 & July 2014)
Elk Walk is a large-scale public puppet intervention featuring five puppets made of unconventional and found materials, inspired by the fossilized skeletons of the extinct Irish Elk—the largest species of deer to ever live. Each puppet stands about 12 feet tall and is operated by three puppeteers. The puppets migrate in a herd across Downtown Vancouver in order to call to mind human beings’ complex relationship with and effect on this landscape, past and present. The piece is an act of collective remembrance and imagination, as well as an experience of wonder, bewilderment, and delight for the public who happened to witness it.
Elk Walk debuted in July 2014, and was remounted in June 2016 by Center A Gallery.
